Kayla Brown

That past, however, becomes consequential in a darker way: Kayla later uses an intimate recording to threaten Jungkook and exposes it to Shelby Anderson Barnum, turning their history into a means of coercion.
Identity and Background
Kayla is two years older than Jungkook and his fellow student Namjoon Kim. After graduating, she moved to Washington, D.C., to work with her father, a chief executive. She returns to the university to visit a former economics professor and present her work at Brown Corp to students. The visit also has a personal purpose: she intends to surprise Jungkook, her former sexual partner.
The narrative introduces Kayla through a striking entrance: a black luxury car stops near Namjoon, and its rear door opens to reveal someone he has not seen for a long time. Jungkook has already turned away and headed toward the dormitory, leaving Namjoon to greet the unexpected visitor. Kayla is described as blonde, brown-eyed, and conspicuously attractive; her polished appearance and expensive clothes later accompany her confident, seductive manner. Her return brings the past directly into the university setting where Jungkook is attempting to build a different kind of relationship.
Her Earlier Relationship with Jungkook
Kayla and Jungkook’s history began when he was a first-year student and she was in her third year. He later describes her as the one who seduced him; their friendship became a sexual relationship, and she was his first partner in that sense. The narration emphasizes how powerfully he remembers their physical compatibility, even measuring it against his experiences with Lexie and judging no one else to have matched it. This history gives Kayla a particular hold on his memories: she is not simply an old acquaintance returning to campus, but someone associated with a kind of pleasure and sexual familiarity he believes he has not found elsewhere.
When they meet again, Kayla’s visit has both professional and personal purposes. She has come from Washington, D.C., where she works with her father, to speak to students about her work at Brown Corp and visit a former economics professor; she also wants to surprise Jungkook. He responds with open appraisal and a flirtatious greeting. Kayla answers his attention in kind, and, as her hand moves more insistently across his back, she gives him a look that intensifies his interest. They leave together for the hotel where she is staying for the week.
Afterward, Jungkook wakes from a short nap beside her and recalls their time together with satisfaction. His response reinforces the force of their former sexual connection, but it also shows the narrow terms on which he understands it. In his thoughts, Kayla is the partner who knows how to please him, while tenderness is contrasted with the roughness he associates with their encounters. That distinction becomes important as Jungkook’s feelings for Shelby develop: the old arrangement offers familiarity and physical intensity, but it is not the same as the gentler intimacy he is beginning to imagine with someone else.
Departure and the Limits of the Old Arrangement
Kayla’s return to Washington, D.C., is marked by the same black luxury car that announced her arrival. Jungkook sees her near the university entrance, where the vehicle waits behind her; after a brief farewell, she gets in and leaves. He watches the car recede, but his attention is soon pulled toward Shelby, standing on her skateboard with her hood up and a drained expression. The contrast places Kayla’s departure beside the emotional consequences of Jungkook’s divided past and present, without establishing that Kayla knows what Shelby has seen or felt.
Later, Jungkook recounts that when Kayla came to see him again, he rejected her advances. He explains that she began to lower his jeans and push him toward the bed, but he stopped her because he could not let her continue. The refusal marks a change in the relationship: their former familiarity no longer gives Kayla automatic access to him, and Jungkook’s decision is presented as a boundary he consciously maintains. His account also clarifies that his renewed encounter with Kayla did not mean he intended to resume their earlier arrangement.
Coercion and Criminal Accountability
Kayla’s return eventually shifts from an attempted revival of their former arrangement to coercion. When Jungkook tells her that he must get ready to meet his girlfriend, Kayla invokes intimate videos of the two of them and threatens to send them to Shelby unless he meets her at Aphrodite's Love that night. The threat turns their shared past into leverage: Kayla treats the recording as a means to dictate Jungkook’s actions and put his current relationship at risk.
At the club, Jungkook drinks from a glass Kayla gives him. He later remembers being unable to control his body; Kayla takes him to the VIP floor, where he cannot resist as she places his hands on her waist. She then approaches Shelby and shows her a video of Kayla and Jungkook together. Unable to get up or call out, Jungkook watches Shelby leave after seeing it. His later recollection of the drink leads him to understand that Kayla had drugged him. The episode overturns the appearance of a straightforward betrayal: the video is presented to Shelby as proof against Jungkook, while his impaired state and inability to act reveal the coercion behind the encounter.
Jungkook goes to the Onyx Hotel and confronts Kayla. In a burst of rage, he grabs her by the throat; the encounter makes his anger visible, but does not erase Kayla’s responsibility for what she has done. The police later arrive at her hotel with a recording and arrest her. A judge finds her guilty of possessing drugs for criminal purposes and sexual assault, sentencing her to five years in prison and a fine of $75,000. Kayla’s arc thus ends not with the restoration of her former intimacy with Jungkook, but with legal accountability for using drugs and sexual coercion against him.
Narrative Role and Characterization
Kayla’s role is built around a reversal in how her return is read. At first, the narrative filters her through Jungkook’s memory of their intense physical compatibility and stages her arrival as a glamorous surprise: the black luxury car, her polished appearance, and the confident reunion all seem to promise a familiar encounter. Later, the same confidence becomes a tool of pressure. She invokes the video to compel Jungkook to meet her, then presents it to Shelby as evidence that he has been unfaithful, while he is unable to move or intervene. The recording therefore changes meaning with the context withheld from its viewer: what appears to be proof of willing betrayal is entangled with his drug-induced incapacity.
Her confrontation with Shelby also exposes the assumptions Kayla uses to frame the relationship. She treats Jungkook’s gender as evidence that he cannot be trusted and presents herself as the woman who understands what he wants, reducing his present attachment to Shelby to a temporary exception. That claim is sharply undercut by Jungkook’s refusal to let Kayla continue her advances on an earlier occasion and by Shelby’s insistence that Kayla’s unwanted kiss constitutes sexual assault. The contrast shifts the question away from whether Jungkook once desired Kayla and toward whether he could consent to what happened at the club. Kayla’s conviction and five-year sentence finally recast her from a former lover who seemed to possess privileged knowledge of Jungkook into the person held criminally responsible for drug possession and sexual assault.
